Spiritual Adoption Program
Purpose of Program
The purpose of the Spiritual Adoption Program is threefold:
It promotes prayer for babies in danger of abortion and for parents contemplating abortion.
It educates parishioners about the development of the unborn child over the nine-month period before birth.
It demonstrates what the pro-life movement is doing to help pregnant women and their children before and after birth.
How does it work?
Participants pledge to pray for nine months for a baby in danger of abortion. A special prayer card is given out to each participant. The card is in two parts; both parts have the name of the baby on them. One portion of the card is attached to a bulletin board in the church gathering place and the other portion is retained by the "spiritual parents." The prayer is included on this part.
While this child will remain unknown to his or her "spiritual parent," God knows who the child is. 'Naming their child' helps to keep the "parents" focused on the reality that their prayers are helping to save a particular baby's life from abortion.
During each week of the program, all of the parishioners are given information about their babies' development in the womb through the church bulletin. This is especially important for school and religious education programs, and helps the participant form a genuine sense of connection with his/her adopted baby.
Near the end of the program a "baby shower" is held and gifts of baby items and cash donated are given to a local pregnancy center.
Who benefits from the Spiritual Adoption Program?
While it is not always possible to see the particular effects of prayer, we know through Scripture that God wants us to pray, and we know by faith that He answers all prayers.
The educational aspect of the program benefits people of all ages. The weekly announcements and the monthly full color posters, both depict and describe in words the baby's development each month. There is no mention of abortion on the posters.
Your selected Pregnancy Center will benefit from much needed goods and cash.
